Build A Rocket is led by songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jen Carlson, brought to life with the collaboration of guitarist Jason Taylor, bassist Johnny Kirk, and drummer Russ Jenkins. Jen and Johnny—brother and sister—have been playing music together since they were kids, forming the foundation of the band’s tight rhythm section. Russ, a seasoned music teacher, brings his steady groove to the drums. Jen and Jason met serendipitously in a ghost town bar in the California Delta, where a shared love of guitar-driven music sparked an instant friendship and creative partnership. With a decade’s worth of songs in the making, Build A Rocket is a fusion influences, blending math rock and punk roots with the subtle undertones of Americana and country. Drawing from the pairing of a haunted surf break, the galloping energy of a spaghetti western, the mystique of a 60’s UFO convention, and the grit of an old biker gang. The songs, mostly rooted in real-life experiences, tell stories of adventure, heartache, solitude, and at times, murder. With gritty lyrics, they paint vivid portraits of ghosts from the past and present.
