About this Event

Suhail Yusuf Khan - Sarangi

Suhail Yusuf Khan is a critically acclaimed, eighth-generation hereditary sarangi master, vocalist, and ethnomusicologist. Descended from the legendary maestro Ustad Sabri Khan, he began his training at age seven under the Guru-Shishya Parampara tradition and made his debut at eleven. Celebrated by BBC Radio as a "contemporary master," Khan seamlessly bridges Hindustani classical music with global genres, including collaborations with rock band Switchfoot, the folk-jazz trio Yorkston/Thorne/Khan (Domino Records), and a recent Nobel Peace Prize-commissioned Bob Dylan project alongside Ringo Starr and the Kronos Quartet.

In 2024, Khan earned his Ph.D. in ethnomusicology from Wesleyan University, making him the first member of a traditional, hereditary sarangi lineage to receive a doctorate. His research focuses on the political and emotional landscapes of marginalized South Asian musician communities. Previously a Cultural Ambassador for the British Council and a faculty member at the University of Hartford's Hartt School, he has held residencies at institutions including MIT, Oxford, and UCLA. He is currently a Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of California, Santa Cruz, where he is writing his first book, Mirāsītude, and recording a solo album, Sacred Offerings: Sounds of Heritage.
